Difference, in the sense that it is said of
difference. Moreover, it is not we who are univocal
in a Being which is not; it is we and our
individuality which remains equivocal in and for a
univocal being" (DR, 39).
The claim that it is we that are equivocal in univocal
being, of course, applies mutatis mutandis to beings
in general as well. Yet this should come as no
surprise when we follow out the logic of the univocity
and immanence theses. If we were to say that *each*
being were univocal then we would have a plurality of
univocal beings. But if this were the case, the claim
that being as such, being qua being, is itself
univocal would then collapse into an analogical
conception of being and we'd be returned to the whole
image of thought that Deleuze works so carefully to
undo. Incidently, it is this thesis about the
univocity of being or its immanence that leads to
Deleuze's preoccupation with questions of
individuation. When you have granted that being is
univocal, you then need to account for how something
is actualized out of this "medium", how a cut is made,
or how something individuates itself within a
transcendental field. Rather than beginning with the
entity and working his way up as does Aristotle and by
extension Kant, Deleuze instead seems to begin with
being and work his way down to beings being produced
within the medium of duration... Almost a
neoplatonism.
