Dear Jim - Faith is not an absurdity, but the act of
believing may be seen as absurd. I must also tell you
that it was the church Father Tertullian who makes
the comment which perhaps you are referring unto"
Credo
quia absurdum: Faith because it is absurd; here the
Father is telling you he believes because it is
absurd
in the relation to the men's notion of intelligence
and reason. But this fidelity of the Christian is
not absurd from the point of faith itself. The Father
is telling us that faith in the Risen Christ is absurd
inthe eyes of men who think like the Greek thinkers
andthe brooding mockers who abuse their ratio to
attack
our faith. Soren Kierkegaard was a Christian who
came to faith by very different paths, and invented
the notion of the leap of infinite faith. This is
perfectly compatible with Catholic theology.
Sincerment, Sister Prudence Isodore.
Also we can say that the absurd is the 20 centuries
invention of misere beyond any culpabity, and such an
admission of denial can only bring us regrets, no?
