a good quotation - it looks like one from the Waldrop Complexity book - that
has a lot of chat about Wolfram by Langton and Kauffman. He's a weird
character who did loads of that work when he was a teenager and in his ealy
twenties. he quit academia when he got his phd to set up a software company
making Mathmatica. He figured that if all the mathematicians in the world
used his software he could exrecise undue influence on the mathematics of
the future. and indeed everyone who does pure mathematics anywhere in the
world now uses his software. That's more control over a set of research
programmes than almost anyone has ever had - scary..
