This is my first post to this list
so hello everybody, from Chicago.
I am interested in a D/G political analysis of the situation in Colombia. It seems that the ultra right wing paramilitary war machine has taken over the state via "democratic" elections. If we agree with the previous statment, then we are talking about a fascist situation there with its own singularities. Something like a "low intensity fascism"?

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH
TO COLOMBIAN PRESIDENT-ELECT ALVARO URIBE VELEZ
Washington, D. C.
May 27, 2002
Alvaro Uribe Vélez
President-Elect
Bogotá, D.C.
Dear Mr. President-Elect:
Congratulations on your election as President of the Republic of Colombia. You, your fellow candidates, and the Colombian people again demonstrated the great measure of Colombia¹s courage and commitment to representative democracy by insisting that Sunday¹s electoral process go forward, even in the face of grave personal danger from the enemies of freedom.
Colombia¹s long and proud democratic tradition is under threat from the twin evils of terrorism and drugs.
Colombia is our friend and our ally, and the United States will be steadfast in its commitment to help Colombia achieve peace and prosperity, and to protect and promote human rights, to the benefit of both of our peoples.
I look forward to working with you and advancing our mutual goal of freedom.
Sincerely,
/ s /
George W. Bush
