Warmachine,
well thanks for your gush of sentiment and abstractions - as well as
your curious idea that western countries have some a "right" to decide
what is best for every person/country and to enfore that with military
action.
funnily enough, despite your calls for NATO/America/Europe to act and
your desire for heroic for world war II style action, the countries you
talk about have a long record of acting to interfere with others... you
seem to be suffering from the idea that you are on the side of the
"goodies" and therefore those targeted by your government as "baddies"
are really "evil maniacs". political rhetoric and media coverage are not
a particularly accurate index of reality.
now we have to call it "ethnic cleansing" because we can't recognise it
as what it really is: war. not the hollywood war, or the war people like
to fantasise about, but real war - war is always genocide. Neither
America nor the European countries bombing Serbia have any place to
criticise genocide , barbarity, or unprovoked miltary action. the
democracy you invoke and desire for serbia is the system which has more
blood on its hands than any other. the west talks a rhetoric of
peacemaking, but the history books tell a different story. the west has
been built on genocide and exploitation, an unprecendented destruction
and violence: colonisation, trade, slavery... a holocaust that beggars
even the horror of Nazi concetration camps. why America in particular is
so convinced that the rest of the world owes it undying gratitude /
loves its shitty consumer culture and products has always escaped me.
you want to join the army? you want to join in the slaughter? you think
that you killing someone you think is "evil" is justified, would be a
"good action", but that the serbs killing ethnic albanian's is a "bad
action"?? - but either way, people die.
people die...
maybe serbians dying as a result of NATO action will save the lives in
kosovo - but will that mean fewer people die, or do we just have to
wonder who NATO will kill instead, to make up the numbers? who will be
the next "enemy" - the next "maniac" suddenly discovered to draw fire
from domestic political difficulties, to sell papers, to sell tv
advertising?
I share your horror at the events unfolding in serbia and countless
other parts of the world; but talking of maniacs, evil, and monsters
does not help us, or those suffering directly. Such talk is, and always
has been, a political/religious rhetoric which acts as a
self-justification.
best wishes,
dan
