there are lots of untested ways to regulate 'speculation' that range from my
call of the abololition of private property to governemntal controls for
value, use, amount, allocation etc. of existing properties. You will surely
cry 'socialism,' followed thereafter by 'economic destitution.' In a country
where real wages have fallen consecutively for tweny years, along with the
number of private property owners, I don't see why the first is so bad in
light of the second. In any case, property ownership is highly regulated
(i.e., zoning), and engineered to retain value. Couldn't we just fuss with
the engineering a little?
No,I'm one of those big bad reviewers who haven't read HRH; I though his book
was just full of glossy pics. It seems that his and Chris Alexander's books
are the ONLY ones you read, so it seems there cannot be much a a dialogue
here (I read Alexander, but a long time ago, and it seemed silly to pay $45
for a book that is as popular as it is for an arch/design book printed on
such low quality paper; i.e., its publishing costs couldn't warrant that
cover price). But I am suspicious of the 'fact' that your impetus and
direction in urban planning seems to be derived from probably the last
monarch of the last monarchy in the western world. Is there something about
his position that appeals to you?
