I think the answer to your question is: be humane yourself.

In other words, don't worry about what 'society' is or is not.
You do not have the power to change society, one way or the
other. You do, however, have the power to change yourself.

which I believe bears on your question. It concerns the moral
issue concealed in your question, and contains relevant
