Bob, Thanks for forward this message.
Nic Musolino writes:...is Mr. Lippert still one of those lurkers?
Am I being overly sensitive or Mr. Musolino are you after me? Or did I come
out of the woodwork as you predicted (you did write, "Unfortunately, my
experience had been that being caustic and attacking has produced the most
interesting (really, any) response" and I guess I've proven you right
again!). I do not subscribe to fiction-of-philosophy, but a couple of people
in my office do and forward your "calls", so when you do so I emerge: This
probably makes me a lurker.
Just to update you: We received the TCP/IP version of our client/server host,
have upgraded both, but are awaiting our direct Internet connection to be
installed (physically). I underestimated how long it is taking Nynex to come
and drop a line into our office, and if it happens in November as I promised,
it will be November 30th at the earliest. More likely is the first or second
week of December. At that time, we will ship (finally) the kits, including
Mr. Musolino's (and you should have received a postcard notifying you of the
delay; I apologize if you didn't). To connect to Architecture On Line through
the Net will require a SLIP or PPP connection (and on a Mac, MacTCP; or on
Windows a WinSock compliant connection). We are also installing a Web server
to allow browsing of portions of ArchOnLine (as well as the ubiquitous
publisher's catalog, sorry and out-of-print Princeton Architectural Press
titles), but Mosaic strips out the interactive nature, requires us or someone
to markup submissions, and while adding more universal access makes it harder
to keep the kind of energy level of Usenet group with some more substantive
"articles" and other resources in tow, which is the aim of ArchOnLine.
We've also added on-line catalogs from both bookstores (like a client-server
lookup into William Stout's 12,000 entry catalog!) and other publishers (see,
we're not that mean), and invited organizations like The Architectural League
in NYC and others to post info, transcripts, symposia proceedings, etc. We're
also hoping Assemblage and other journals will join us, too
Will anyone need it? Who knows. I'm sure you'll let me know and, believe me,
I really do look forward to your criticism, advice, and hopefully input.
Regards,
Kevin Lippert
