Subject: designOL FC via internet:Port 3000 NOW!

Question: I'm trying to log-in to designOnline via TCP/IP on port 3004, with
the FirstClass Client, like you said... and it's not working... What's up???

Short Answer (30 dec 94):

*****************************

NOW USE "fcserver.dol.com" or "204.95.49.2" for "Server" and
PORT 3000 for REMOTE log-ins... (Changed from 3004 on Dec 30...)

*****************************

Question: Why?

Ah, Joshua! How's the type face project?

This brings me to the very point I was about to make here, anyway...
I think I saw you trying to log in this evening! The problem is the PORT
number!

The TCP-IP >settings< default to PORT 3000, which in the SoftArc orthodoxy is
reserved for NETWORK GUI users! Port 3004 is (Again according to DOGMA...)
for "REMOTE" GUI users...(like you)...

HOWEVER!@!!!#@*$#&*&#$
MOST of our users are NOT "Network" users!!!
SO, we have, (taking the consensus of other admins) REVERSED the "orthodox"
ports... THIS VERY NIGHT... (If you had tried around 3:30 AM Chicago Time,
you would have flown right in!)

...SSSSSO------->

**********************************************************

USE PORT 3000 for REMOTE log-ins... which is the default for the TCP/IP
settings
So you don't have to change anything!

**********************************************************

It should work just like I said! In fact, if you look at the ALL NEW
fcserver.dol.com FAQ in the designOnline WWW pages (hint, hint;-)
you'll see that all spelled out. Let me know if it >still don't work...<

Port 3004 (and 3001) will now work for NETWORK users (only if you really want
to pay extra!) The advantage to TCP/IP Network users is that they will never
be waiting for an open TCP Remote GUI session (the number of which are
determined by the 'extra' modem ports licensed to the FC Server...). The
problem is that Network Licenses are about 10 times more expensive than
"remote" licenses. However, SoftArc has been relatively generous (ahem) by
allowing TCP/IP through remote (formerly "modem") sessions, as an
"inexpensive" option!

designOnline is planning to increase our "remote" session capability to at
least 6 TCP/IP and 4 Modem within the next few weeks. Please let me know if
you try to get in via TCP and are refused!

Didja follow all that!?

Thanks for asking!
and Happy '95!

Peter
