others will speak competently and knowledgeably of the standard stuff.

what i am curious about are the suburbs of the major cities of europe. we
see/read little about them. our models of correct european urbanism are
never from the auto age.

(what is important about this is that so much of our--americans, that is--
cultural self-consciousness and self-image stems from our comparison of
what a mess we've made of our urban landscape in the last 50 years and
what the europeans did in the pre-auto age...it may not be a fair
comparison so i want to see how they have handled things in the same
period and especially in the last 20 years when they got rich again...and
the nirvana of sweden aside.)

so what i will look at this summer is whether the eurpeans have really
been very much more clever than we have been in suburban expansion. on
the way to versailes several years ago the elevated train took us through
a lovely little town that for some reason had the whiff of modern---but
it looked pleasant!! i have been curious to go back and see if it really
was new...or just timeless.
