Here's a book title that deals with the creation of 'vacuous' public space in
London via random statistical poisson distributions of unknown cause. :-)

Gravity's Rainbow, Thomas Pynchon, 196x

(Don't know if it makes the cut as a reference for the professional designer,
but as a geographer I've always found it inspiring.)
