Just ran into an article that I have no doubt would interest many of you.
It is in the November '94 P/A and is titled 'Eisenman's Bogus Avant-Garde.'
It's author is Diane Ghirardo. It is not very complimentary to Mr.
Eisenman...though I guess any publicity is good publicity. Anyone read it?
Any opinions?
I found the article particularly interesting because the local 'Public' TV
station in Seattle has been playing (several times now) a video of a walk
though the Wexner Center. At first I thought the video was a clever parody
of a preening critic reviewing a dead white building...as so the narrator
appeared to portray it. Not a person in it. Endless references to 'entry
sequences'... I wish I had a transcript. It was truly funny...though
unintentionally, of course.
Excerpts from the video and the Ghirardo article would make a nice page for
a web site.
The importance of all this is that the language which we use to speak about
the built environment is so truly important and videos (such as I mention)
lead to continued idiotic and puerile public discussion. It's a tragedy
that such a sad piece of 'architectural criticism' could actually make it
to TV.
Cheers,
Dave
