Dave,
Have you ever seen (I'll bet you have) William Whyte's film _Sociable Spaces_?
It attempts (I'd say succeeds) to specifically identify urban attributes that
people find aggreeable=pleasant.
It's been a caouple years, but I recall the film studying, through eye-in-the-
sky camera work, the plaza in front of Mies' Seagram building. Time-lapsed
over the course of a day, one can see how sun and wind and buildings shape
the usage of what appears to be a blank tablet. Also studied is Paley Park
(is that right, John?) shoved between two buildings and enlivened by sound,
movable seating, water features, etc.
At any rate, it's a pretty objective look at a pretty subjective topic.
I gotta hunt down that tape again...
