Definitely a HUGE culture diff here. Europeans, on whole, are not overly
caught up in a desire to own their own piece of land and house. Part of
it is due to the overall high density of European settlement. I did notice,
however, what appears to be a growth of new suburban development in Germany
(around Hamburg, Rostock and oh, yeah, Berlin) that looked, in some cases,
eerily like smaller versions of Irvine, CA (shudder).
I'd like to add, though, that the urban housing, much of which is subsidized,
CORRECTION: the urban subsidized housing is of a much higher level of design
than most here. The market rental housing I've seen in Berlin runs the gamut
