I don't know the *literature* on this subject -- although it must exist.
Bruno Zevi, in "The Modern Language of Architecture," has a chapter
theorizing the
relationship between symmetry and fascism. (Symmetry = civility?)

From my *own* experiences, I have found that those who insistently demand
"civility" in discourse are those who consistently dominate (or try to
dominate) others. If there is a need or desire for "empirical" evidence,
let's put this question to the 281 people on this list. (Are you 281 really
out there?)
