The WSJ article on parking quoted Donald Shoup as saying cities should
charge market rates for on street parking. This reminded me of a
tranportation planning meeting here in Tucson last week attended by an
architect friend of mine. When my friend brought up the subject of light
rail, the planner said, " there is no light rail system anywhere that pays
its own way". When I heard the planners reply, I said to my friend "So, roads
don't pay
there own way"
My question to you longtime design-lers is what is the subsidized cost of
roads in our citys and why would a person trained in transportation
planning not understand that roads don't pay there own way?
