Dear Design-Lers:
I'm new to this list. I've a strong interest in the built
environment, especially constitutions and transformations of same
that raise ethical issues (issues of liberty, justice, rights, and
in general anything bearing on the harm/well-being of parties
affected by such constitutions or transformations). I include
a significant chunk of materials on the built environment in my
environmental ethics seminar at Stanford, teach a whole course on
ethics and the built environment (aimed at people interested in
architecture, urban planning, and civil engineering) and this spring
will introduce a new course in the Civil Engineering Department
entitled "Ethical Issues in Civil Engineering."
With that as background, I'd be indebted to any members of this list
who could share with me any interesting case studies involving the
design of structures or built environments that would be appropriate
for study by civil engineering students in my course (all
engineering majors at Stanford must take one course to satisfy
the School of Engineering's Technology in Society Requirement and
my course will probably be the one taken by civil engineering
majors).
Thnaks in advance for any assistance you are able to provide. If
there is any interest in the syllabi for the abovementioned courses
let me know and I'll send one along.
Sincerely,
Robert McGinn
