Scott,

I agree that information is a part of the rectifying the money situation,
but I think the argument about school is a valid one. It is inherently
frustrating to know that what one is being taught has very little to do with
the actual practice. Our teachers are very fond of allaying our fears
about this by saying "Don't worry, you will learn everything you need to
practice after you graduate." That may be hyperbole, but it is the gist.
This leads to the question of why I am spending money to learn things in
school given their seeming irrelevance. Many of my fellow students are
rather irate over this lack of connectivity. I am not sure what the
solution is. It is not as if you can vote with your dollars after starting
school. You in effect are captive to the ideas of the school and thus
change in the cirriculum is slow in coming if ever because the school has no
reason to be responsive.

Another possibility is for the profession to put pressure on the schools,
but then firms would lose leverage in terms of salary i.e. why should they
pay you more if you don't know more. I don't want to make it a conspiracy,
but there can not be much impetus to change cirriculums to a more
professional slant from the profession. It would be too costly. You are
right in saying that information is the cure, but maybe its not the right
cure for the profession at large. Pay is bad and we need to change it, not
just rant and rave.

Also, I am not sure if I agree with your analogy about Japanese motorcycles.
Salaries are not reflective of poor quality but rather an oversupply of
willing and able interns.
