I have a friend here in San Diego who is a respected architect here and is
his own developer. He is a young, idealistic, energetic guy who is
impassioned with architecture and urban planning. He has gotten together a
small group of investors and has done four projects downtown including
moderately-priced condominium units and a mixed-use project.
My friend loves the total control of design which the architect/developer
role allows him. Lately, however, he's been talking about moving to the
northwest territory! I think he is caught in the classic bind--hooked on
the control but hating the huge chunks of his time required for dealing
with the dogs at his heels.
