Depends what you mean by 'good'. Do you mean successful, or do you
mean brilliant? (I'm not sure the two are necessarily identical). My
answer would be the ability to bridge two cultures, two ways of
thinking: the strictly analytical, serial world of the client and the
synthesizing, imaginative, simultaneous world of the creative mind.

Unconventional and broad. IMO, only some of what it takes to be 'a
good graphic designer' can be trained, and I'm not sure there is any
institution offering it anyway. Some of the characteristics are
innate, some fortuitous, some 'picked up' by being in the right place
at the right time.
