HRL:
>Why?  Well, they need better lighting, better ventilation, better food,
better sleep, better sounds, etc.  The studio just provides all the wrong
ingredients for successful concentration of the work.  It is an incorrectly
placed and used social zone.  Some combination of virtual space and physical
space is warranted in the new learning context.  I would say about 50/50
would be about right for the combination.

I tried this with four other students just as we were beginning the studio
experience. We went so far as to obtain a space, lease, whatnot (installed
lighting, cleaned up). We were only willing to go forward unless we had the
implicit support of the program, or at least one professor to support us
(the one who would frequently visit the studios at school in the evening to
give extended desk crits and other wordly advice). We were discouraged
individually and as a group from doing this; the logic was the same that
prevented us (as five individuals) to be assigned to the same studio
section, that, as the 'better' students, this would have a detrimental
effect on the other students, some sort of brain drain. As you can imagine,
we were not remunerated for any posistive effect we had, no mater what
effect it had on us as individuals (three of the five transferred
eventually; overall, it took the five of us 36 years of full time study to
get four degrees- one is pending- 3 Barchs and a BA).

Whereas the studio and critique system, as an arcance Beaux-Arts
pedagogical device is still is full swing, the notion of ateilier (sp) has
withered.
