home demolitions: the legal basis

"The demolition of Palestinian homes is entirely legal, thanks to an
intricate mesh of zoning laws whose effect for the past 34 years, since
Israel occupied Arab East Jerusalem in the 1967 war, has been to pen a
rising Arab population into a fixed space. Despite a desperate housing
shortage - more
than 20,000 additional homes are needed for the city's Palestinians -
the municipality of Jerusalem grants only 300 building permits a year in
Arab East Jerusalem."
