Dear Friends,
Please join us in a non-violent demonstration of Caterpillar Corporation
this Friday, November 7 at 2:30pm at Iowa State University (meeting at
the Memorial Union) in Ames, Iowa.
On March 16, 2003 my niece ,Rachel Corrie, was crushed to death by an
Israeli bulldozer while she was attempting to prevent the demolition of
the home of a Palestinian physician and his family in the Rafah area of Gaza.
Rachel, who was from Washington State ,was doing peace work when she was
killed. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) soldier who killed Rachel was
driving a U.S. made Caterpillar bulldozer.
Several of Rachel's family members, who live in Iowa, will be gathering
in Ames on Friday, November 7 to pressure Caterpillar to stop selling
equipment to the Israeli military until it agrees to ensure human rights
for
Palestinians. We will be joined by Joe Carr, who is currently a student
at Grinnell College and who witnessed Rachel's killing while also doing
peace work in Rafah. Our hope is that we will be joined by other friends
in
our efforts to remember and honor Rachel and the many Palestinians
killed and
injured by Caterpillar equipment.
Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa is hosting an honorary reception for
Caterpillar this Friday, November 7 on the Iowa State University Campus.
This reception is to acknowledge Caterpillar Corporation recently giving
a grant to Iowa State University.
The Israeli military has destroyed over 10,000 Palestinian homes since
1967, and is now constructing a massive wall that confines Palestinians to
small areas and annexes large amounts of Palestinian land to Israel.
The
bulldozers and heavy equipment that make these atrocities possible are
designed, modified and sold to the Israeli military by Caterpillar
Corporation, an American-based heavy equipment producer.
We join with the International campaign that is pressuring Caterpillar to
stop selling equipment to the Israeli military until it ends construction
of the wall, stops the demolition of civilian property under international
law and ensures human rights for all Palestinians.
Please join us this FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7 at 2:30pm to remember Rachel
Corrie and to protest Caterpillar Corporations participation in the
violation
of Palestinian human rights. We will be meeting outside of the IOWA
STATE
UNIVERSITY MEMORIAL UNION main entrance at 2:30pm. We will proceed to
the entrance of Hoover Building where the reception is being held for
Caterpillar Corporation. We encourage you to make and bring placards
that educate regarding the destructiveness of Caterpillar selling
equipment
to Israel. You are welcome to use images of Rachel and Palestinians killed
and injured by Caterpillar equipment, images of the destruction of
civilian
property or images of the wall.
