To add to yesterday's remarks: I regard daseinsanalytic therapy to be a kind of
learning to think (and thus exist) in a new way. Daseinsanalyse would thus be
exercises in learning to walk in an other mode of human being. This is what is
valuable about Boss' work: the phenomenological exercises it contains in trying
to shift from the subjective mode of thinking and being to there-being.

It's the attempt that's important, not whether one could subscribe to all of
Boss' (sometimes conventional or ideological or conservative) views.

Gr. _therapeuein_ means not only to help or serve somebody, nor just to respect
and honour someone (esp. the gods), but to direct one's care in a certain
direction.

The _therapeutai_ in ancient times were Jewish-Hellenistic ascetics who withdrew
>from life in towns to lead a frugal communal life in little, individual huts,
devoting themselves to contemplation, philosophizing and composing hymns. The
original meaning of Gr. _askesis_ as 'exercise' should be kept in mind.

H. speaks in BzP of a "Ver-rueckung des Menschenwesens in das Da-sein."
(GA65:372), a "de-rangement of human being into being-there." This would have to
be an historical shift, if at all, "uebergaenglich", "transitional", but such an
historical shift has to be lived by individuals learning to walk in an other
direction.

Cheers,
Michael
