On Heidegger and Lacan. Lacan was very enthousiastic about Heidegger in
the 1950s, even translated, with the master's explicit permission, the
essay "Logos" into French. But Lacan was never a Heideggerian, he merely
used some insights to develop his own theory. This also goes for Lacan's
notion of "das Ding" which is most clearly developed in the "Ethics"
seminar. Even if Heidegger is not explicitly mentioned, the overtones are
audible.
Roudinesco writes that Lacan was eager to receive Heidegger's recognition,
and sent "Ecrits" to him. In one letter (to someone else) Heidegger
describes Lacan's text as "baroque", and a bit later, after having read
the text, he writes of Lacan as "the psychiatrist in need of a
psychiatrist". Lacan also traveled to Freiburg in order to elaborate his
theories in person, but Heidegger would not receive him.
