Objectives
This Postgraduate courses, Master and Ph.D. in english in Barcelona which is
linked to its line of research, tries to combine the knowledge and the
critical tools, operative and research tools, in order to develop "Genetic
Architectures". The idea is the following: up until now human beings used to
have to settle for performing on a superficial level. Today, one can go
beyond that threshold and go down to the level of molecular action,
searching into the genetic design, the programming chains that will later
generate artificial intelligence as well as natural live elements by
themselves. Now, when these natural live and/or artificial computer elements
can become an integral part of the architectural construct comes the time to
apply this to architecture. It comes from the point of view of an advanced
contemporary architecture, as opposed to both picturesque environmentalism
and the use of the computer as a mere substitute of manual drawing. That is,
a new ecological-environmental architectural design and a new
cybernetic-digital architectural design, which is emerging with an
increasing number of examples from architects and works.
It is a course on architectural projects, reaching the 1:1 scale in some
elements, which can be reproduced from the Digital Architecture Workshop of
the School, where you can use the latest CAD-CAM technology and a personal
computer is also available for every student at their assigned work place.

Fieldwork, August 2004
Thesis, 01 September - 17 December 2004
Final Thesis Reviews, 16-17 December 2004
Objectives
1. Another Modernism, 13-16 April 2004
The course will discuss modern urban and dwelling culture in its relation to
the dynamics of tradition. A first objective is to elaborate a theoretical
and methodological framework for the study of urbanism and dwelling culture
as an important aspect of material culture. A second objective is to
introduce the students into the anthropological literature on urbanism and
dwelling culture. Finally the course aims at stimulating a profound case
study based reflection on the meaning of modernization and on the
transformation of tradition.
2. Cities, Urbanism and Development, 19-23 April 2004
Course material will be case-based and derived from specific practices that
have been implemented in cities under-going rapid change with limited
financial resources. The course will discuss contemporary urban practices
and city form and culture in their relation to tradition and innovation, the
policies, programs and projects of the international financial institutions
and agencies, as well as globalization and cultural identity.
3. Integrated Response Strategies, 3-7 May 2004
The course will focus on integrated strategies for development in second
tier cities that tie economic, social and environmental needs to
architectural growth. The course will select a given case study in parallel
to the design studio, giving students the tools to analyze an urban context
and uncover its inherent dynamics, possibilities and constraints, from a
series of outlooks.
4. Critical Development Theory, 10-14 May 2004
A critical review of the history of international cooperation from its
genealogy to its present discourse. The course would look at the present
policies of the United Nations, IMF, World Bank, regional development banks,
etc. in parallel with the growing body of critical literature concerning
these international institutions.
5. Cultural Identity and Globalization, 17-21 May 2004
As the so-called new world order is being firmly established, questions of
cultural identity rise to the fore. The course will discuss the process of
globalization and its affect upon urban cultures world-wide.
6. Urban Paradigms, 31 May - 4 June 2004
This theoretical course will examine key themes or issues which challenge
the development potential of cities through the exploration of precedents
from various political and cultural contexts. The course would aim to
improve the understanding of contemporary issues facing second tier cities
and their potentials through the use of paradigmatic models and through
historical and contemporary literature. This course will develop a critical
understanding of the wider social, economic, political and environmental
impacts of the shape, structure and design of contemporary urban projects
and developments. Amongst the themes to be developed would be: zoning,
'spontaneous' development, sites and services, infrastructure, etc.
7. Urban Ecology & Sustainable Building, 7-11 June 2004
Urban ecology and sustainable building are rapidly developing fields at the
intersection of architecture and urban planning, engineering, public
administration and economics. The course introduces students to the theory,
principles and practice of urban ecology, sustainable building and urban
design. It reviews the history of ideas as well as the practical needs that
have led to the formation of these fields.
8. Disaster Relief Planning, 21-25 June 2004
Recognizing the world's cities as a rapidly increasing setting for poverty,
violent conflict and displacement, the course seeks to enhance a greater
understanding of the links between human settlements, humanitarianism and
community development. The "quasi-urban" character of so many settlements of
refugees and displaced people also makes for a natural merger between the
humanitarian and human settlements fields. Usually self-settled, crowded and
under-resourced, these emergency settlements have much in common with the
poverty in fast-growing cities. Common to both these fields - human
settlements and humanitarianism - is the notion of effective development
practice and the art of the reflective practitioner. The essential
philosophy of the course is that a person cannot be a good humanitarian
worker or an effective urban practitioner unless first and foremost
developmental in his or her work - adopting an approach to practice which is
reflective, people-centered and long-term.
9. Minimum Cost Construction & Climate Control, 28 June - 2 July 2004
The course will include a critical overview of different attempts towards a
more efficient construction: prefabrication, rationalization of traditional
techniques and innovative building systems. The course would investigate the
'art of technology' and review contemporary projects which have obtained a
level of innovation, resulting in beauty and poetry in addition to
environmental control.
Design Studio, 13 April - 29 July 2004
The design studio will be an opportunity for participants to apply the core
course of the program in an intensive design exercise at the urban design
scale. Teamwork will focus on the creation of strategies that are based upon
a series of well-founded principles, which enforce the public realm and
address cultural / site specificity yet remain adaptable to the changing
political, socio-economic conditions of particular contexts.
Fieldwork, August 2004
The fieldwork will be an opportunity for participants to work as a group,
on-site, in a specific location as a result of the broader ideas and
investigations explored during the design studio. The fieldwork will serve
as a means for direct fact-finding -in interviews with community agencies,
neighborhood visits, and site surveys- in preparation for the individual
thesis projects.
Thesis, 01 September - 17 December 2004
During the thesis period, each participant will propose and develop a
specific investigation, based on the strategies explored during the
coursework, design studio, and fieldwork. Each student will have a thesis
advisor, concretize a series of objectives and carry them out in an urban
scale design proposal.
Final Thesis Reviews, 16-17 December 2004
"MAC: Metaphysics of Architecture and Computation"
Postgraduate courses and Master in english in Barcelona
Direction
Karl S. Chu
Schedule
09.01.2004-11.06.2004
Credits
60 credits (600 hours)
Matriculation fee
2950 euros
Programme
The program for Metaphysics of Architecture and Computation, or, MAC, offers
a post graduate degree after the completion of two consecutive terms at
ESARQ, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona. The program has a
two fold agenda: (1) research and development into theoretical,
philosophical and cultural aspects of computation, and, (2) to develop
innovative methods of design based on generative systems to implement new
forms of architectural morphology. The program will deal with issues that
are seldom addressed by architects who are involved in the design of
so-called digital architecture. It is a rigorous and systematic program
using the latest software technology and facilities to conduct research and
design. Toward this end, it is one of the few programs systematically
designed to address metaphysics with pragmatic and symbolic dimensions of
architecture. Students in the program are required to take two design
studios, a theoretical seminar, a workshop and lectures by visiting
specialists from outside the University.
1. MACS 1 This introductory design studio will engage in the research and
development of theoretical, philosophical and historical aspects of
computation and their relationship to the history of ideas and architectural
design. Students will be introduced to the concept of software programming
and learn how to implement simple programs to generate architectural design.
(20,5 credits)
2. MACS 2 The second studio will focus on the development of new design
techniques to generate architecture that is systematic and cohesive. The
general idea is to explore the concept of digital architecture as a
symbiotic Jungle that co-evolves over time. Along with this notion, students
will also explore into the phenomenon of globalization that is currently
taking place and to develop strategies to address this phenomenon from the
standpoint of computation, artificial life and intelligence and their
potential relationships to a new form of digital architecture. (20,5 cr.)
3. MACT This is a theoretical seminar that will address issues in
computation and their relationship to the history of ideas and architecture.
As such, it will involve readings from philosophy as well as from the
history of computation. The seminar is designed to make students aware of
the deep connections that exist between various disciplines and how they are
related to the history and design of architecture. This theory seminar will
be offered in the first term of the program. (9 cr.)
4. MACW This is a five weeks intensive workshop focused on learning
developing rudimentary programming. This class will be taken in the first
term of the program (5 cr.)
5. MACL Lectures by specialists from outside the University (5 cr.)
