Subject: call for papers: Digital Design Thinking
-----------------------------------------------------------

Original contributions on the topic of "Digital Design and Digital
Design Thinking" (DDT) are invited. Of special interest are papers that
directly address the theoretical and research issues that appear in the
following description: www.technion.ac.il/~rivkao/call.html
<http://www.technion.ac.il/~rivkao/call.html> . Papers will be refereed
by an international board of reviewers. Accepted papers will be
published in a forthcoming special edition of the international journal
of Design Studies.

"On Digital Design and Digital Design Thinking"

call for papers for a special issue of Design Studies

guest editor: Rivka Oxman

The prevalence of digital phenomena in our design lives has become so
common and pervasive that we now refer to this collective set of
phenomena as Digital Design.

Digital technology is finding its way into design culture. It appears
today that the phenomena of digital design constitute a fundamental
change in how we do, think, practice, socialize, collaborate and
effectuate a wide range of the complex processes that we refer to as
design. Digital design is becoming a paradigm shift in the definition
and practice of the design disciplines and it is today developing and
changing rapidly.

Emerging concepts of form generation are contributing to new design
paradigms. Furthermore, digitally mediated design is becoming
inter-related with the virtual, and virtual design environments are
becoming increasingly immersive, knowledge rich and intelligent.

Being digital has begun to affect the way we think, conceive, represent,
present, communicate about, and materialize our designs by integrating
media in the conceptualization, realization, communication, and
production of designs. Digital design has become ubiquitous in the
design processes of virtually all design disciplines. This is no longer
a case of simply trying to merge computing tools with design, but
presents the need to find a new understanding of the nature of design
thinking in digital media. In this new and evolving world of the
e-practice of design, digital design thinking is now emerging as the set
of phenomena that characterize the way in which the digital designer is
beginning to think and interact with his representational media, his
mediated work-place, his electronic community, and his expanded e-identity.

Digital media today provide the stimulus for new intellectual and
theoretical directions. They have become a central focus for new design
theories. They are currently challenging designers of all disciplines to
formulate a new understanding of design.

It is rapidly becoming important to conceptualize this unique emergent
field. The purpose of the special issue is to conceptualize, theorize,
characterize and exemplify the central and significant phenomena of
digital design. We can expect that this emerging new field will also
begin to generate a new body of design research focused on such subjects
as the cognitive, psychological and social behavioral characteristics of
the digital designer.

The special issue will seek to emphasize the uniqueness of digital
design as a form of design thinking in the light of what we have tried
to characterize as an emerging paradigm of design in all of the design
disciplines. It is the essence of digital design and the unique
characteristics of digital design thinking that are to be the central
focus of the special issue. The issue will attempt to provide a
comprehensive perspective and mapping of emerging sub-fields of
research, educational and practice-oriented interest.

Original papers are solicited upon a broad range of subjects in digital
design across the complete perspective of the design disciplines.

Submissions are requested in the form of extended
abstracts (1000 words). Abstracts should be sent to the following
address: mailto: rivkao@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx <mailto:rivkao@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Authors of selected submissions will be asked to provide a full paper
which will be peer-reviewed. The anticipated publication of the special
issue On Digital Design is early 2005.

Important dates:

Submission of extended
abstracts.......................... 30th April, 2004

Notification to selected authors............................... 30th
