Architecture college stresses on designing discipline
NT Staff Reporter
Panaji April 23: The members of the Academic Advisory Board of the Goa
College of Architecture (GCA) decided to follow designing discipline in the
architectural course, instead of the existing technical discipline.
Mr Jamini Mehta said that the Board which was constituted 3 years ago,
functions as a link between government and the architectural institutions.
It favours introduction of analytical ability rather than the impressions
gathered by the students, he added.
Mr Mehta also informed that Mr Gurudev Singh of the University of Canberra,
Australia had been conducting a programme with the first and second year
students of the college.
Prof D D Doshi, speaking on the occasion, observed that the standard of the
GCA has risen substantially and within next 2 years, it will be one of the
top architectural schools.
"Students awareness about Goan and Indian heritage has grown," he said,
pointing out that if the GCA organises related workshops and seminars based
on national and local interests like sustainability, environment and
heritage, Goa would soon become a centre of such activities.
He said: "Many design-related disciplines like photography, product
designing and so on would be added to the institution." "We are trying to
develop larger institute totally focussed on areas of design within next 5
years," he noted.
Meanwhile, Mr Mehta said that the GCA proposes to publish the works of the
final year architectural students for public viewing and also holding of
exhibitions of the models prepared by the college students.
It was also informed that the changes in the architectural syllabus were
introduced by the former principal, Mr Cho Padamsee. The members of the
course, including the noted architects, Prof D D Doshi, Prof Nilkanth
Chhaya, Prof K T Ravindran, Mr K D Sadhale, Ms Radha Pamnani, Mr Mahesh Rege
and the principal of GCA, Mr Jaimini Mehta attended the meeting. Mr Charles
Correia, another member was absent on the occasion.
