The City of Calgary Public Art Program is pleased to announce a national
competition for a major sculpture commission. Visual artists, with a history of creating and executing large scale public works, are invited to submit proposals for sculpture to be placed in the interior main lobby of a newly-constructed, world-class Water Centre Complex.

The Water Centre will incorporate LEED designation and will be an innovative and sustainable building. It will become a central operational and administrative hub for The City of Calgary Waterworks, Wastewater and their support groups. The building will incorporate a substantial amount of glass wall with an open concept interior, producing a feeling of fluidity. The theme of the sculpture should reflect this notion of water, as a word, concept or substance. The project is meant as stepping stone in the rejuvenation of the community surrounding Manchester Centre, and is scheduled for completion in Spring 2006.

Three finalists will be selected to visit the site before producing a
maquette. If necessary, finalists will be reimbursed up to $700 for travel from their studios to Calgary, lodging and meals. A $1500 honorarium will be awarded to each of three finalists to produce and ship the maquette to The City of Calgary Public Art Office.

An information package, containing all the information artists will need to prepare the initial proposal, including the commission amount, design brief, and detailed site and background information, is available at
www.calgary.ca/publicart.
