MCD move for Lal Kuan
Esha Roy
New Delhi, February 3: Years of vacillation and several fires later, the
MCD will finally shift the Lal Kuan market. The deadline for the move —
six months, said Commissioner Rakesh Mehta.
Behind the cramped market of shops of every size and kind is a veritable
storage area for chemicals that led to the devastating fire in 1999. MCD
officials said the decision came following the first Masterplan draft
which proposes shifting of hazardous and wholesale markets outside the
Capital to the NCR region.
If the market is shifted within six months, it will be the first
hazardous market to be shifted out of the Capital.
‘‘This activity will be carried out in the next six months in which time
the shopowners will be allowed to relocate themselves,” Mehta said.
“After the six-month period, we will shut the shops. We have already
decided to convert the Lal Kuan area into a heritage zone. I have told
our heritage consultant Debashish Nayak to prepare a heritage plan.”
Nayak, an Ahmedabad-based conservation architect, has carried out
heritage conservation work there.
