design competition
?Living box Prefabricated Living Unit?
2. Subject of Competition
Subject of competition is the design of a prefabricated living unit for
housing, transportable on wheel vehicle or by air, which can be used even
as permanent house and which can be able to comply with contemporary
lifestyle in terms of living comfort and architectural language.
It is attended that answers to design subject will consist in one of two
following typologies of prefabricated units:
? Living unit as preassembled block/blocks
o Unit made by preassembled block/blocks whose dimensions allow transport
on roads, rails or by air. Dimensions can be related (but it?s not
compulsory)
to standard dimensions of containers for commercial transportations that
automatically comply with transportability problems and don?t need special
vehicles. Final unit might be obtained by a single block or by assembling
and
connecting more than one block.
?Living unit as assemblage of light prefabricated small elements
o Unit made by technological systems relying on small prefabricated elements
that can be assembled on site according to the need for special dimensions
of living units (when such dimensions don?t allow transportation with
common vehicles) or when structural conception of technological system
doesn?t allow handling of preassembled blocks (usually when system doesn?t
provide for a self-foundation basement)
Dimensions an Transport
There is no specific prescription about module dimensions; designing
attention shall be directed
toward transportability; specific vehicles for transport and eventual
requirements shall be specified.
Materials
Every construction material can be used in the project with preference
toward innovative materials
in terms of lightness, cheapness and environmental sustainability.
Companies that collaborate to
organisation of the competition (see first page of announcement) suggest
one or more products
and technological systems that are considered optimal and fully complying
with general criteria of
evaluation of projects (see further). The list and related technical cards
of such products and
systems can be seen and downloaded from the webpage of the competition:
www.edilportale.com/livingbox . Use of such products in the project is
anyway not
compulsory.
3. Submission of proposals and design
Design proposals shall be sent through apposite web module that is
available at following web
address: www.edilportale.com/livingbox
Username and password for signing in, will be provided after registration
to the competition.
Design drawings
Candidates shall explain the general idea of the design project by mean of
drawings that shall be
explicative as much as possible in order to let fully comprehend
technological and design choices,
without necessarily going into technical and constructive details when
these are not strictly
necessary to understand systems adopted. It?s not requested an executive
design but the project
of an idea that might be developed in detail in a second moment.
Series of drawings shall comply with following scheme:
? 1 drawing according to following scheme, that will be used for general
final
presentation;
o Format: Jpeg or Gif, max resolution 300 DPI, max file dimension 5 Mbytes,
max
drawing dimension 1600 x 1200 pixel; filename: ?nameofthegroup-1.jpg? or
?nameofthegroup-1.gif?
? Up to 5 drawings (images or image compositions), that might contain
sketches
necessary to fully understanding the design project, eventual construction
details,
innovation features and the preview of different settings of the prototype
in several
environment.
o Format Jpeg or Gif, max resolution 72 DPI, max file dimension 3 Mbytes
each, max
drawing dimension 1600 x 1200 pixel; filename: ?nameofthegroup-2,3,4,5.jpg?
or
?nameofthegroup-2,3,4,5.gif?
? Descriptive relation
o Word (max 5 pages)
? Brief presentation of Designer/Group of designers
o Word with text and pictures of designer and/or projects (max 1 page)
It is also possible to send all the files on a CD-Rom (PC compatible) to:

4. Challenger requirements
Competition is mainly directed to architects, engineers and designers. It?s
also encouraged
participation of students from Architecture and Engineer Faculties and from
Schools of Industrial
design and Interior design.
Participation can be individual or in a group: in second case, when
registering, it twill be necessary
to indicate the name of the group and the name of one representative as
head of the group and
delegate to represent the group; to any effect of this competition a
challenging group of designers
will collectively have same rights of a single challenger

5. Registration and submission of projects
Registration to competition shall be done no later than 30/11/2005 using
specific web module
available to following web address:

Registration is free.
Publication of Results, Projects and Assignment of prizes to winner will be
done no later than
31/12/2005

8. Jury committee and criteria for evaluation of proposals
A jury committee will be nominated by organisers and will include experts
from sponsor Companies
and Supporter Institutions. The jury will examine all projects and will
declare the winner. The
evaluation will be done by use of a numerical ranking (1 to 100) made by
composition of following
values:
? Quality of design and architectural style: max 30 pt
? Living Comfort: max 30 pt
? Innovative features: max 20 pt
? Cost containing: max 10 pt
? Transportability: max 10 pt
Evaluation of the jury is unique and unappealable.
9. Prizes
Jury committee will assign three prizes according to final ranking:
- 1° Prize
o ? 3.000,00 + Complete Software Suite by ACCA Software: Autorapidus
(CAD), EDILUS (Structural Analysis), PRIMUS SYSTEM (Quantity Surveying)
for a total value amount of ? 4.820,00
- 2° Prize
o ? 1000,00
- 3° Prize
o ? 500,00
10. Project publication
Soon after proclamation of winners a digital publication containing
projects and results of the
competition will be sent to all users of edilportale.com (140.000
designers, construction companies
and suppliers) thus encouraging cultural and business contacts between
designers and companies
working on elportale.com
With registration to competition and sending of drawings, participants
automatically give to
edilportale.com S.p.A. the copyrights of using the works and relative
images for all publications
connected to the aims of the competition.
11. Project requirements
Proposed project shall be original and shall show innovative features.
Specifically the author
ensures that no other than him has copyrights on his project. Challengers
are responsible for their
own project in relation to eventual violation of patents and copyrights and
are committed to
consider edilportale.com S.p.A. not reliable for any costs connected to
their eventual defence in
controversy.
Participants will keep their copyrights as authors of their designs so that
each project,
independently from results of competition, will eventually be object of a
further specific contract for
using copyrights and for using the design for industrial production.
12. Reasons for exclusion
Following reasons will be valid for excluding challengers from competition:
- Arrival of inscription and documentation later than specified deadlines.
- Missing or incomplete subscription of Registration
- Missing or incomplete presentation of drawings required at point 5 of this
announcement
13. Incompatibility
- Each challenger can?t take part in more than one group and cannot
participate both as a
single designer and as a member of a group.
- Each challenger cannot propose more than one project
