Trade in services accounted for around 19% of world export activity in 2004, with the value of world trade in commercial services rising by 16% to touch $2.10 trillion. Given the fact that services trade accounts for about 40-50% of gross domestic product (GDP) for developing and 70-80% of GDP for developed countries, it is now virtually impossible for any country to prosper under the burden of an inefficient and expensive services infrastructure.

In this era of knowledge-based economies, professional services are the real basic intellectual capital. Given the vast pool of talented professionals in a wide range of services, India’s interest in the sector extends well beyond IT services. Movement of our service suppliers through Mode 4 remains crucial for a range of services, including professional ones. The potential to achieve $200 billion service exports is also well within reach, provided we succeed in gaining better access to services markets of developed countries and build requisite internal capabilities.

Professional services encompass a wide range—legal, accountancy, architecture, engineering, consulting, etc
