Thin wins as furniture starts to go on a diet

For decades furniture has been eating well, bulking up like a deep-fried
country buffet. Lounge chairs morphed into a chair-and-a-half, sofas got
so bloated you nearly need a hydraulic lift to extract yourself. Beds?
Well, it takes a jack to raise some of today's king-size beauties to
smooth a rug underneath.
It was as if Americans bought furniture by the pound -- no wonder, since
today's suburban McMansions seem to demand large-scale furnishings to
fill large-scale spaces.
But furnishings previewed recently at the Milan, Italy, and High Point,
N.C., furniture markets show off slimmer figures.
