"Vile buildings are an affront to our senses", says RIBA president
George Ferguson who has proposed a national "X" list of buildings worthy
of demolition*. "What I seek is public intolerance of the worst and
demand for the best. This is about repairing damaged places."
"Demolition is about planning for a better future. There is a valuable
public service in opening up a debate about the impact of architecture
on our everyday lives and well being," says Channel 4's Head of Arts Jan
Younghusband.
Channel 4 has a well-established commitment to intelligent examination
of the world of design and architecture which includes the award winning
series Grand Designs, coverage of the RIBA Stirling Prize and a major
forthcoming series about the transformation of the Yorkshire town of
Castleford. After the Demolition series, a subsequent programme is
planned that will follow the construction of a replacement building.
