What is light? How can it enhance our daily lives? What identifies good
lighting experiences? How can the nature be enjoyed within the
metropolis at night? In today's fast-moving lives, how can lighting
create the soothing rhythms that we so desperately need? These are some
of the questions that this 2-day workshop seeks to address ?Eand
participants from all walks of life are welcome in this adventure!
Organized by the Lighting Detectives?E this workshop is a unique event
in Singapore. Duxton Plain Park has specifically been chosen for this
event because of its particular character - it is relatively desolate in
spite of being close to a very busy street. The Lighting Detectives see
a unique opportunity to make LIGHT UP NINJA! an exciting event for the
citizens of Singapore during the design Festival 2005!
The Lighting Detectives are a non-profit group of people who are based
in Singapore and Japan, and are engaged in observing and recording
international nightscapes. This group initiated its activities in 1990
and is the brainchild of Mr. Kaoru Mende ?EFounder of Lighting Planners
Associates. His vision is to increase awareness about lighting cultures
through practical methods and fieldwork. Equipped with cameras,
sketchbooks and photometers, the detectives make visits to attractive
world cities doing research and studies.. Originating from simple
questions about the present status of our cities at night, the Lighting
Detectives now have branched out to organize workshops, forums, interact
with various sections of the society in developing an understanding of
lighting cultures, and how they affect us all.
The five rules that the Lighting Detectives follow:
1.Identify the heroes and villains of city lighting.
2.Sincere and accurate observations of lighting.
3.Appreciate the beauty of artistic lighting.
4.Be inspired by refreshing light activity & design.
5.Good Lighting is a life long experience - be prepared for a joyride!
This event is organized as part of the Singapore Design Festival 2005.
