India Inc. to take best out of D-schools
In a world of big brands, where quality is a given, what’s the biggest
differentiator for products? It’s the design, stupid: to borrow a term
from the Clinton administration. From cities and huge urban structures
to tiny watches, slowly and surely design has become the final frontier
for product companies and to a large extent even for services.
At the recent Harvard Graduate School of Design symposium, university
president Lawrence Summers drove home the point with Chicago’s
Millennium Park. Frank Gehry’s explosive bandstand, Anish Kapoor’s
shimmering kidney Bean, Plensa’s video fountain and Gustafson’s delicate
park, all where just 10 years ago parking lots and train tracks jostled
for space.
Obviously design improves cities and the quality of life as at
Millennium Park where hundreds of people gather together to listen to
music, admire art, stroll around and chill out.
