PERSEA BOOKS; 247 Pages; $14 PAPERBACK The story "Tel Aviv" has a woman stalking the leader of a Bauhaus architecture tour in the city because she suspects he is having an affair with her husband. As in many of the other stories, the narrator moves back and forth in time, in this instance to illustrate the close and long-term relationship she has had with her husband since childhood. As the truth of her life becomes clear, she indirectly confronts her husband and proposes a compromise that will perpetuate the falsehoods and the distorted fidelity they have always lived with.

"(Glashuette) is a very, very German name," Pfeiffer-Belli says. "And it works very well in Germany because there are a lot of people who know Lange as a great brand from earlier times."

Pilgrimage time-outs in Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is quite the comeback kid. UNESCO recently named the "White City" a World Heritage site for its 1930s Bauhaus architecture. Both business travellers and tourists — kept away by the intifada — are scrambling to book previously empty hotel rooms. And, while summer is usually the high season, the city's balmy winter temperatures draw plenty of visitors looking for a bout of sun worshipping and shopping between Christmas and Hanukkah pilgrimages to Bethlehem and Jerusalem.
