India: Satellite technology to mark structures
As the controversy over the demolition of illegal structures in Delhi
continues, the Union science and technology ministry has come up with a
hi-tech solution — satellite imagery — to ensure that unauthorised
constructions do not take place in future.
Cameras with very high resolution will be installed in Chandni Chowk in
the Walled City.
The project, involving use of satellite imagery, is being undertaken in
association with a Russian company. The project will be subsequently
extended across the Capital. It is expected to be fully in place in six
months. This process may involve the country’s own satellite in after
the launch of Cartosat.

NEW DELHI: Miffed by the mayor's stand that she should stop meddling in
the demolition crisis as it directly involved only the court and the
corporation, chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday stopped convening
of daily coordination committee meetings at her home.

| this mysterious 'third party" technology is...
We will tell the high court that it will be unfair to undertake such
widespread demolitions. Instead people should be given a chance in case
they have undertaken constructions that are not unsafe," the source said.
The third part of the strategy will be to introduce a system to check
unauthorised constructions. MCD is likely to suggest adoption of
techniques involved in disaster management. In this 3-D technology and
satellite imagery is used to keep track of height and extensions of
buildings.
Coupled with cameras, the technology can get accuracy of up to a metre.
The source said: "This technology can even detect a fence or small
cemented structures in gardens. It can track extensions of each dwelling
unit."

| anyways, there are always baloons
NEW DELHI: When industrialist Vijaypat Singhania broke records by
becoming the first man to soar 69,852 feet above sea level in a hot air
balloon, little would he have imagined that this feat would show the way
to thousands of potential flyers.
Within a span of two months, those opting to learn ballooning has
increased by almost 50 percent, says the Balloon Club of India (BCI).
To tackle this huge demand, the club is planning to open 10 more centres
in India. At present there are six clubs, most of which are affiliated to
BCI.
