Six Advance in Sofia's Top Architect Race
Politics: 16 January 2006, Monday.
Six of 13 candidates have moved to the next round of Sofia's contest for
a chief architect.
Five men and only one lady are the advancers.
Petar Dikov, Borisslav Bogdanov, Borisslav Borissov, Lyudmil Leonidov,
Stefcho Dimitrov and Kalina Kirova will present their concepts for
development of the capital city.
The last stage of the contest - interviews - will take place on January 26.
Earlier that day, the candidates for the top post were involved in a
televised debate, during which two bidders opposed the idea for erecting
skyscrapers in the capital's centre.
No European country built high facilities within the boundaries of its
historical centre, bidding architect and socialist municipality council
member Borislav Borisov said in a televised interview. He clearly stated
his resistance to the idea of building a skyscraper on the Todor
Alexandrov Boulevard in the city's heart, right across from the St.
Sofia monument.
Another bidder for the top architect's chair, Nikolay Parpov said that
even without preliminary research, all specialists were aware of the
culturally historical layers that would emerge if the zone in question
was dug up. He added that a higher building did not necessarily mean a
more beautiful and more comfortable one.
