While the MCD is razing buildings for violating Plan regulations on the
number of floors or for encroachment of land, in Tokyo the reason is
violation of earthquake safety norms in the constructions. Four such
buildings have been identified so far and the architect faces
prosecution. Cut to Delhi, in Zone Four in terms of earthquake risk.
Quake resistance is not a priority.
The response of the two cities to the demolitions is also far from
sisterly. While the Sheila Dikshit government is making efforts to stop
the demolitions ordered by the court, the Japan Government backs the
demolition of four multistoreyed residential buildings in Tokyo, citing
public safety.
