HC slams delay in building Juhu wall
....
Residents opposed the proposed art plaza and constructions on beach land
claiming that the area fell under the coastal regulation zone.
A final, no-frills plan with landscaped gardens was approved in March
this year. The court also ordered the construction of a boundary wall to
keep out fresh encroachments on the beach.
Around 6,398 sq m of land had been freed of encroachers and the wall was
to run along 250 m on the landward side of the beach. As per court
orders, the private plot owners had to construct the wall, failing which
the collector had to execute the work through Mhada.
The money was to be recovered from the plot owners. Mhada's counsel
claimed that there were no funds earmarked to construct the wall. The
judges were, however, in no mood to listen, and asked it to dip into its
contingency fund.
The Rs two crore beautification plan drawn up by architect P K Das is to
be funded from the member of parliament local area development (MPLAD)
fund of actor Hema Malini.
