A kitchen museum is opened in presidential palace
New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) Rashtrapati Bhavan, India's presidential
palace, now has a kitchen museum, showcasing a unique collection of
crockery, silvery cutlery and copper and crystal utensils.
The museum was inaugurated Tuesday by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
'The first-ever kitchen museum has been set up at Rashtrapati Bhavan to
showcase artefacts from the collection of the president's household,' a
press release from the presidential palace said.
The museum exhibits various objects including those dating back to the
pre-independence period. 'They have been displayed sequentially starting
from food preparation, cooking, serving, dining, post-dining as well as
equipment for outdoor picnics,' the note said.
The exhibits include the 'Star of India' crockery, silver cutlery,
kitchenware, crystal glass wares, cutlery sets in different materials,
silver dishes, coffee makers, fruit stands, picnic boxes and other items.
The museum is located right below the dome of the 340-room Rashtrapati
Bhavan - built by renowned architect Edwin Lutyens and considered an
architectural masterpiece - and is designed to harmonise with the
character of the rest of the building.
'Rich architectural details that form the language of the design in
Rashtrapati Bhavan are adapted to the design of the display systems to
showcase the kitchen wares,' it said.
Arrangements have been made to make the museum disabled-friendly.
Sources in Rashtrapati Bhavan said it was Kalam's idea to allow people a
chance to see the rare artefacts. The president had asked his staff to
clear up the basement and it was during this cleanup that antique
crockery, probably dating back to the colonial era and used by viceroys,
was discovered, they said.
