End of the Line for Bell Labs, Birthplace of the Cellphone?

Story by Margaret Foster / Aug. 2, 2006

The Eero Saarinen-designed New Jersey laboratory where the cell phone, laser, and transistor were invented will likely be torn down for a new office park.

Built between 1957 and 1962, the two-million-square-foot Bell Labs in Holmdel, N.J., is one of the largest office buildings in the country, once housing almost 6,000 people.
