UCL/EH Maritime Archaeology Bursaries

With apologies for the inevitable cross-postings, the Institute of Archaeology, University College London is pleased to announce that student bursaries are available for the MA in Maritime Archaeology in the academic year 2006-07.

Generously funded by English Heritage, the bursaries are equivalent to a full AHRC postgraduate award, and cover all tuition fees plus a generous living allowance.

Applications from suitably qualified candidates are being accepted now, for entry at the end of September 2006. You should hold a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject, awarded with first or second-class honours, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard from a university or educational institution of university rank. Where the US/Canadian marking scheme is used, a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. In addition, you should also have at least two years experience of work within British field archaeology.

Programme Outline

Maritime archaeology is the study of maritime material culture in its social, political, environmental and economic context. The MA integrates maritime archaeology within the broader body of archaeological knowledge and theory, as opposed to treating it as a discrete sub-discipline.

The course covers the range of approaches and methods used by maritime archaeologists today, focusing on legislation, conservation and heritage concerns. It provides a seamless understanding of coastal and submerged cultural landscapes and demonstrates the relevance of maritime archaeology to wider socio-economic studies.

The programme provides a solid basis for a future career in maritime archaeology, including doctoral research. It is also ideal for practicing archaeologists who wish to gain new skills and to enhance employability.

Staff involved in the MA include Ole Grøn, Gustav Milne and Joe Flatman. There are also regular visiting speakers.

Students are required to take the core course ‘Global Issues in Maritime Archaeology’ and the equivalent of two whole element MA options, of which at least one must be ‘Underwater Archaeology: Techniques and Methods’. A second option may be chosen from other appropriate Institute Masters degrees (subject to availability and resources). In particular, students might wish to consider one of the courses from the MA in the Archaeology of London, MA in Field Archaeology, MA in Managing Archaeological Sites or MSc in GIS and Spatial Analysis in Archaeology (see http://www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology/masters/index.htm for a full list of courses. Students also write a 15,000 word dissertation, which is produced as a result of an individual research project undertaken during the programme. This dissertation can be on any approved topic relevant to the degree and to the taught components selected. Students are assigned a supervisor to guide them through this process.

The programme lasts for twelve months (starting at the end of September), although it is possible to take the course part-time over two years. Most of the structured teaching takes place in the autumn and spring terms, the summer being devoted to work for a dissertation.
