Draft housing code could transform Mumbai

Developers happy, but implementation could take time as several laws
would have to be amended.
Several provisions of the draft housing policy released for public
debate by the Maharashtra state government last week may lead to major
changes in the sector in the state.
For example, the proposal of the Maharashtra government to empower
architects to approve building plans has been welcomed by real estate
developers and the construction industry.
Niranjan Hiranandani of Hiranandani Constructions pointed out that
proposal to permit architects to approve building plans will lead to
faster implementation of projects.
The Rajasthan government had implemented this provision some time back
and so had the municipal authorities in Surat.
The practice was therefore not new.
