"It shows how narrow, how shallow life was ...," Frank Lloyd Wright told a packed auditorium at the College of William and Mary.

Wright's views already were known to those who followed his career. Two months before he spoke in Williamsburg, the 71-year-old architecture iconoclast told The Associated Press how he felt about America's veneration of the past.

"The ideals of honesty held by our forefathers are too rudimentary for the mind awaking up in America now," Wright had said. "Homage to the pioneer and sentimentalizing over our forefathers seem to have been badly overdone."
