Don’t blame architects for anarchy

(03-01-2007)

Chief Editor of Nha Dep (Beautiful House) Magazine Nguyen Viet Chau spoke to Thoi Bao Kinh Te Viet Nam (Vietnam Economic Times) about the challenges facing the country’s architects.

People blame the chaotic architecture of Viet Nam on the unprofessional working style of architects. What do you think about this?

This is generally an unfounded opinion. I think the problem resides in the implementation and construction of projects rather than design. One problem is the weak management process that is often used when developing urban areas. To date there are not specifically enforceable regulations on construction. Many plans look very good on paper but weak management during construction has made a mess of the master plan. Authorities tend to focus on the legal and safety aspects of construction rather than artistic and architectural quality.

This lack of direction pushes administrators into situations that they are not comfortable with and puts a clamp on architectural expression and movement. It also at times causes irreparable damage to the face of urban architecture.
