Plan Your Winnipeg
A contest for young people to make our city better
Always thought you had the greatest idea for making Winnipeg an awesome
place to live? Have you ever dreamed of zooming along Portage Avenue in
a slick monorail or maybe you envision a glassed dome covering the city
during the deep freeze of winter? Well, here’s your chance to pitch your
creative ideas for making this city better -- and get paid for them to boot!
Get together with your class, your friends or on your own, and come up
with the next best concept that will forever change the city. If your
idea is selected, we’ll help you finalize it with all the bells and
whistles including blueprints and those cool scale models if needed!
You’ll then be given a chance to present your ideas to the world or at
least a group of keen people from The University of Winnipeg, The
University of Manitoba, Red River Community College, and the Winnipeg
Free Press.
Roll up your sleeves and tackle tough urban issues such as revitalizing
downtown, enhancing transportation, creating innovative housing
projects, eliminating poverty, exploring sustainable development, or
planning an entertainment hub. If you’re ambitious you may even want to
plan the next Silicon Valley, or for that matter, the world’s tallest
haystack! Tear things up or build something new. You and your teammates
are the planners and the designers, but don’t forget to watch your budget!
The contest is open to children and youth in the City of Winnipeg. You
can enter as an individual, group or as a school. Fit yourself into one
of the following categories:
Elementary
Junior High
High School
Individual or Group, 18 – 24 years old
The winner of each category will get $1000, with $500 for second place,
plus many other prizes. The deadline for initial submissions is January
30, 2007. If you’re chosen as a finalist for the competition, you’ll
develop it further and present it to a workshop in March.
