‘Gurgaon is horrific’
AMRITA THAPAR

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 2007 02:55:15 AM]

Noted architect and urban planner Leon Krier was in Delhi recently to address the International Network of Traditional Building, Architecture & Urbanism (INTBAU) and Nabha Foundation’s conference on New Architecture & Urbanism. Krier is best known as the man behind Poundbury in Dorchester, UK, which was planned as a model town combining traditional architecture and modern town planning. ET records his impressions on his maiden visit to India.

What was your first impression?

Very sympathetic chaos (laughs).

Part of the conference included a field trip to Gurgaon. What did you think of that?

It’s horrific. Something which should have never been allowed to happen, ... happened here. It’s the worst kind of town planning. It’s vulgar, anti-culture. What struck me the most was this green lipstick type sky scraper, surrounded by shanties. Maybe that’s a symbol of times to come.

That is because in India slick urbanism shares space with slums and that contrast is stark. Where do you think we went wrong?

cont'd....
