Barracks are better

Architecture Inside Out
By Mohamad Tajuddin Mohamad Rasdi

All over the country, in small towns and big cities, old police barracks are being decommissioned and are awaiting demolition. Our maverick architect grew up in one and thinks they should be saved. Not because he’s sentimental but because they could teach today’s designers a thing or two about living in comfort and harmony.

ONE of the most successful machines a habitae (machines for living in) in the context of Malaysia’s own brand of modernistic architecture were the Jabatan Kerja Raya-built police barracks I lived in for eight years as a child. That old place could give today’s modern concrete cubes lessons on climate control and community-friendly architecture.
